Brandon’s passion for technology and dedication to his studies make him a perfect fit for this award.
We recently interviewed Brandon to learn more about his plans and aspirations. Read on to discover why he has earned the 2024-2025 scholarship.
Ethan Allen’s Interview with Brandon
What made you choose University of Maryland?
I initially applied to University of Maryland because of its strong engineering program. Upon visiting, I learned about the School of Engineering’s new facilities and programs, and I became even more excited about my future there. I felt at home, and could see myself as a student attending classes and participating in the many activities that the University offers. It has a beautiful, traditional campus with so much for me to explore and discover.
What drew you to engineering?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved technology and have been fascinated by the way everything works around me. I always played with toy cameras, vacuums, and remote-controlled cars, but above all, I was drawn to computers. How could a collection of metal shapes and wires create the interactive images we see on the screen? When I was seven, I remember being mesmerized watching my parents set up our family computer. A few days later, I figured out how to install a new browser on it by myself.
Do you plan on pursuing an internship of any kind? If so, what do you hope to accomplish?
I definitely plan on pursuing an internship during college, whether it be during the school year in Maryland or over the summer when I am home in the Hudson Valley. It will provide valuable experience toward achieving my dream career of being a computer engineer.
Outside of school, what do you enjoy doing with your time?
Outside of school, I work out five days per week. My family is very important to me. I love when we travel and make memories together, with my grandparents and cousins. I enjoy spending time with my friends going to the beach, taking bike rides, and going out for ice cream.
How will Ethan Allen’s scholarship support you?
I am grateful for the Ethan Allen Scholarship! In order to achieve my goals, I need to focus on my education in college rather than the financial obstacles that come along with it. This scholarship will enable me to do just that, granting access to the quality education I need, and from which I will thrive.
What is your dream job?
Since I built my first computer at age 12, I have constructed seven more. After building my first computer, my career goals became immediately clear. After researching my options thoroughly, I knew that I was destined for a degree in computer engineering. Over time I have become even more fascinated by STEM as a whole, both inside and outside the classroom. I love to talk with people about computers, cars, philosophy, and how the world works. The little kid who questioned what made the wheels on a car turn when the gas pedal was pressed is still inside me. That kid is eager to start pursuing a degree in computer engineering, and becoming a successful computer engineer.
Why do you think it’s important for companies like Ethan Allen to invest in Hudson Valley’s next generation of young professionals?
Investing in the Hudson Valley’s next generation of young professionals provides them with so much more than financial assistance toward pursuing a college education. It further inspires young professionals by serving as a reminder that they were granted an opportunity to achieve their goals, because someone truly believed in them. That kind of support and encouragement goes a long way toward shaping the future of the Hudson Valley’s workforce.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
The field of engineering provides significant positive effects on the quality of life for humankind. It impacts every field of manufacturing and innovation. Engineering is at the core of everyday items humans take for granted. Objects as simple as a pen, or as advanced as a smart phone, have been conceived with the intention of creating a reliable and trusted product. This is why I want to be an engineer. I see myself working in a successful company, designing innovative computer software and hardware. In addition, I would like to work my way up within the company to influence production and shape the future of technology as we know it.
Congratulations, Brandon!
With his enthusiasm and dedication, Ethan Allen Workforce Solutions is proud to support Brandon as he embarks on his educational journey in computer engineering. We are confident in his bright future and look forward to seeing the innovative contributions he will make in the years to come.
